[STEAM] Under the Sea: Exploring Water as the Source of Life (Grades 1st-5th)

January 13, 2026 @ 1:00 pm 3:00 pm

Learning Objectives

  • Explore how water supports and sustains life by examining marine ecosystems and the science of water cycles and habitats.
  • Apply engineering and design principles to construct a balanced, three-dimensional diorama that represents an underwater environment.
  • Integrate art and creativity by using color, texture, and perspective to bring the ocean scene to life.
  • Strengthen problem-solving skills as students plan, design, and build their underwater diorama using various materials and techniques.

Faith Integration

Throughout the lesson, students reflect on the sacred symbolism of water as a source of life and renewal. In Scripture, water represents both creation and rebirth—from the Spirit moving over the waters in Genesis to the cleansing grace of Baptism. As students create their underwater worlds, they are invited to see how God’s creation is sustained by His life-giving presence. The diorama becomes both a scientific exploration and a celebration of God’s design.

What is STEAM?

STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. By blending these subjects, students learn to think critically, design creatively, and solve problems in real-world ways. At the Ave Maria Arts and Innovation Circle (AMAIC), we connect every STEAM project to Catholic teaching, helping students discover God’s presence in both creation and innovation.
